Here at Boone’s Mill Trading, we love it when products fill multiple purposes, and our Crack-Open Geodes are no exception! With the help of a hammer and adult supervision, crack these geodes in half to reveal dazzling crystals, never before seen by human eyes. Combining the beauty of crystals and the fun of breaking rocks with hammers, we’re sure you’ll love this two-in-one activity and gift!
Between 416 and 443 million years ago, marine animals called cystoids lived in ancient seas. Cystoids are a class of echinoderms – animals with hard exoskeletons that contain a high concentration of magnesium calcite. When a cystoid died, its appendages and stem quickly broke off, leaving the hollow exoskeleton, covered by sand and sediment. Eventually, its internal organs decayed and silica replaced the magnesium calcite of the exoskeleton, leaving a quartz fossil with a hollow center. Ground water, rich with silica, filled the cavities of Cystoid fossils, causing quartz crystals to form. Over millions of years, the seas receded, leaving the fossils trapped below Earth’s surface… until now! That means that when you crack open your geode, you’re seeing crystals that have never been seen before!
Be sure to use eye protection and gloves and do this activity with an adult.
